Dinner With Churchill by Robin Hawdon

“By the time he gets up from the table, he’ll be well into his cups, his fiercest passions, and his deepest prejudices. And from there on we’re all on a train with no brakes, God help us!”

At the start of World War II an innocent girl from England’s Lake District comes to London to train as a secretary. By an extraordinary stroke of fate Lucy Armitage suddenly finds herself conscripted as one of the team of overworked secretaries to First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill, and thrown in at the deep end of the war’s opening stages.

From there on she becomes intimately involved with her employer’s phenomenal brain and eccentric habits. She is witness to an evening of fierce dinner table debate between Winston and his arch political enemy, Neville Chamberlin, whose days as Prime Minister are numbered.

As the war clouds loom and Winston prepares to take over the leadership of the nation, Lucy’s professional life becomes complicated by her personal one, when romance intrudes and leads her into the world of espionage. Her trials become increasingly fused with those of her famous employer, and with the eternal conflict between good and evil regimes that still exists today.
